Tien Shan Mountains

Tien Shan Mountains

The "Celestial Mountains": the roof of Central Asia with peaks above 7,000m, glaciers and highland pastures.

About

The Tien Shan (Chinese for "Celestial Mountains") is one of the world's highest mountain ranges, stretching across Kyrgyzstan from east to west. Most summits reach 4,000-5,000 metres; its highest point, Peak Pobeda, rises to 7,439 metres on the Chinese border.

This vast mountain system shapes Kyrgyzstan's natural borders with hundreds of glaciers, deep valleys and rich highland pastures. Nomadic herders still live traditional lives in the foothills of the Tien Shan. The region is world-renowned for trekking, mountaineering and horse-backed exploration. Its scenery — snowy summits, green valleys and glacial lakes — offers unique frames for photographers.
